SCHOOL OF BIBLICAL STUDIES

(4 months New Testament, 5 months Old Testament)

The SBS is an exciting journey through all the books of the Bible. At the end of the course, you will have an overview of the content, background, historical setting and meaning of every book. You will also have a deeper insight in who God is and what His plan for mankind entails. This forms a solid foundation for a life of service in the church, mission and society.

Inductive Study Method

The SBS is built on the inductive study method. Based on thorough observation of the text, the inductive method seeks to let the Bible speak for itself. We try to be listeners of Scripture. Therefore we don’t start with books and teaching about the Bible, but with the Bible itself. Throughout the nine months we will study the whole Bible, book by book.

In order to do this we consistently use the following three steps:

  • Observation: What does the text say?

  • Interpretation: What did the text mean to the first readers?

  • Application: What does the text mean for me/ us today?

The emphasis of the school is on self-study of the Word of God. During the nine month process of study you will read each book of the Bible at least five times. For every book you produce written reports which will be checked by SBS staff. This will help you to interpret as good as possible and to improve your study skills. For every book you’ll meet with your tutor in order to discuss the major theme of the book and its structure.

There are lectures approximately three mornings a week (at the beginning of the school and during seminars there will be more). In the lecture you will receive teaching on additional information on the books to help you with your studies. The lectures mainly focus on background information and on difficult passages.

Living together and learning together

The SBS is a full-time school and the students live, work and study in our training base in Budapest. God teaches us in the classroom during the lectures, but as well in our daily life, during our work and in our relationships. So alongside the studies, each student will be a part of the base life. We have times together in intercession, worship, meals, feasts, discussions, etc. We also work together two hours a day in practical work – we consider all of these as important aspects of the Christian life and training.

Ministry

Our school is part of YWAM Budapest. YWAM has been operating in Budapest for more than fifteen years and now has several vivid ministries into this exciting gateway city between West and East. As a school we will be involved in different ministries i.e. street evangelism, English clubs and a coffee house. This gives us a wonderful opportunity to pass on God’s treasures and amazing hope which we will find in the Bible.

Academic information

The SBS Budapest is part of the degree programs of the University of the Nations in Hawaii. This means that doing a SBS will earn you 12 credits for each three months segment.

What do past students say about the SBS?

"The teachings of the School of Biblical Studies have made me love the word of God. Now, having a solid foundation and adequate tools, I fervently desire to know God more and more..." (Brenda L., S-Korea)

"The more questions I asked inductively, the more questions I get at the end, but I experience more confidence and peace in Christ alone" (Jane, China)

"I thought that the Bible was boring and I never read it before I came here. I had been a Christian for a long time and I was ashamed that I knew so little. I really desired to know what is in the Bible and to get my own foundation on the Word of God. Now, 9 months later, I have reached my goal and learned how to always be a Bible student. This is a great school."
(Linda H., FR)

"SBS opened my eyes to the message of the whole Bible. I read the New Testament
many times, but missed out on the full message of the Old Testament. I have a heart of worship and a greater desire to go and share this message." (Rebecca S., USA)

"The more I study the Word the more real I desire to become with my relationship with God and people." (Yussuf M., Nigeria)
"The SBS is perfect for anyone who has been involved in ministry for a short or long period of time, because your passion for God and the Word will be renewed. Your calling will be sharpened in such a way that you will be better equipped to reach the world with the Gospel!" (David S., USA)

"The way I read the Bible will indeed never be the same again!" (Leocadia K., Singapore)

"SBS is a great foundation for any occupation in life. You get a complete Bible overview in its original context which is uncommon even in most seminaries. I'd recommend this school to Christians no matter where they are in their spiritual walk." (Zachary F., USA)
