Can God use me in missions?

Absolutely. Not only that, He wants to! Jesus gave His life on a cross so that all men and women could have fellowship with God. There are millions upon millions of people in this world who do not know about God's incredible sacrifice. Untold thousands die each hour without ever having heard about Jesus and His love for them. God yearns for Christians who will take the good news of Jesus Christ into a lost and dying world.

Is this mission only for young people or only focused on young people?

Youth With A Mission has always sought to involve young people in ministry. While much of YWAM's outreach and training indeed focuses on young people, many second-career missionaries join YWAM as well. You can find people from age 8 to 80 in YWAM, and the people we serve come from all walks of life.

How do I get started in YWAM?

In order to join YWAM every person must first do a Discipleship Training School (DTS) or Crossroads Discipleship Training School to fulfill the entry level requirement to join staff.

What is a DTS and/or CDTS?

The Discipleship Training School (DTS), YWAM's 5 or 6 month introductory training program, is offered in over 200 locations around the world. The Crossroads DTS is designed for families or people approximately 35 years old and older.

How long is a DTS?

The DTS lasts five months. The first twelve weeks are spent in Budapest. There you will spend time in lectures, worship, intercession, local evangelism and a host of other activities. It is a time to focus 100% on God and develop a deeper relationship with Him. The staff and community structure help develop discipline in your personal prayer life and study habits. For most people, the lecture phase of DTS is the most life changing twelve weeks of their lives.

Following the lecture phase, each DTS participant goes on a missions trip to an international location for seven weeks. Following the outreach phase, all DTS students spend a Debrief Week in Budapest prior to graduation.

What does a common day look like in DTS?

In planning the daily curriculum for our students, we have made every effort to balance a challenging, active schedule, with lots of time for relaxation and processing new teachings. Past students agree that our recipe has been a successful one.

A normal day for a DTS student might be as follows:

06:30 a.m. wake up
07:00 a.m. breakfast
07:30 a.m. quiet time
08:30 a.m. worship
09:30 a.m. intercession
10:10 a.m. morning break
10:30 a.m. lecture
12:30 p.m. lunch
01:30 p.m. lecture
03:00 p.m. service time
05:00 p.m. free time
10:30 p.m. lights out

This is just a sample. Each day is different and the schedule changes slightly with intercession times, ministry, small groups and outreach training.

Why do a DTS??

Christianity is all about transformation. Often we try and make minor adjustment in our life when really what we are needing is a heart transplant. The DTS is a heavy duty tool designed to bring heavy duty intimacy with God and ballistic Christian Living. Many people struggle to know God's future for them and use this time as a retreat from their familiar surroundings. With minimal distractions, they go hard after God and for the first time understand why God has made them and what their unique mission in life is.

Is the DTS full time?

Yes. This is a 24/7 deal.....just like how Jesus trained his disciples for maximum impact. Apprenticeship style for world changers.

What is Outreach?

Outreach is a time where you go to the "mission field? and put into practice what you have learned during the lecture phase. It is a hard but worthwhile part of the course.

What can I do after a DTS?

The DTS is the primary foundation school that YWAM runs. This basically means that after you have completed a DTS you can do anything within YWAM. You can do a school of your own particular focus or interest (EG. School of Biblical Studies), or join staff at any of the YWAM operating locations around the world.

But all in all, our heart is to see you hear God's will for your life and to see you follow that plan.

Do YWAM staff get paid?

To join YWAM as staff anywhere in the world, you need to have your own financial backing. Many YWAM locations help people put together a prayer and financial support team (e.g., friends, home groups, churches, relatives, etc.) before they join as staff. Most YWAM staff meet their financial needs through financial supporters while others hold an additional paying job for financial or ministry reasons.

What's the weather like in Budapest, Hungary?

July-August is nice and warm. Evenings are cool, especially when the wind blows. You can expect snow anytime between September-May and cold weather after October. April-June the weather begins to warm up and this is when we receive most of our rain.

Can I bring a musical instrument?

We, as a ministry, don't have any musical instruments to loan students, however you are free to bring your own.

What immunizations do I need?

We ask that you get your personal vaccinations caught up: normal boosters, as well as Hepatitis A and B, before you come to your DTS or staff on the base.

Where does the money come from?

Student & Short-Term YWAMERS:

  • Raise or provide their own support funds.
  • Responsible for their housing, food and personal ministry expenses such as travel and communication
  • Undertake short-term outreaches and/or U of N courses

Staff YWAMERS:

  • Raise or provide their own support funds
  • Responsible for their housing, food and personal ministry expenses such as travel and communication
  • Undertake long-term ministry commitment

YWAM Centers:

  • Receive gifts (money, real estate, building material, medicine, etc.), tuition fees, board payments from in-house staff
  • Provide facilities, vehicles equipment, supplies, etc.

It is through these facilities and the hearts and hands of dedicated laborers that the ministry flows to fulfill the last command of Jesus: "GO AND MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS..."

How do I get started?

Glad you asked, click here to take the first step.

Do I need to be able to speak Hungarian?

No. The DTS will be taught in English, although we will encourage you to learn some basic words and phrases to use when going throughout the city and interactive with the people of Hungary. We may provide Hungarian translation if needed.

What kind of housing will be provided for DTS?

Students will be living together in a “community” environment. This will mean living with several other students in a dormitory setting. Couples and families will have rooms of their own.

What about meals for DTS?

The cost of meals is included in the school tuition. They will be simple and will tend to be European style. Students are usually involved with choosing menus and preparing meals.

Should married couples attend the school together?

Yes. Both husband and wife are expected to attend together. We are open to families with children and would want to dialogue with you about your particular situation prior to acceptance.

Do I need a visa or resident’s permit for Hungary?

Visitors from many foreign countries (especially North America) to Hungary are allowed to stay in Hungary for 90 days out of 180 days. The DTS schedule is designed to conform to those requirements, which means a special visa or permit is not required.

How far in advance do I need to apply for my passport?

If you do not already have a passport, which is valid for the dates of the school (plus an additional six months), you should begin the application process as soon as possible. It can take up to 10 weeks in some countries.

What about medical insurance?

It is up to the student to provide his/her own medical insurance during the DTS. We can suggest information about getting short-term coverage at your own expense if you request it. Medical insurance during Phase 2 (outreach) is mandatory and will be added to your outreach cost unless you are already covered by your own policy.

What about my home church?

We feel that it is important that the pastor and/or elders of your home church have prayed with you to confirm your sense of God’s leading you to the DTS. If you plan to come to the school and have not yet communicated your intentions to your pastor, we urge you to consult with him and/or your church eldership. We will take very seriously the pastor’s reference that accompanies your application.

What if I am thinking of joining YWAM Budapest, or another part of YWAM after the school?

Many opportunities exist for those who would like to join YWAM as full-time members after completing their DTS. Completion of a DTS however, does not ensure acceptance as YWAM staff. After the school the student must apply directly to the base to which he/she is interested in joining.
