| The year 1999 was a fruitful and exciting time for our YWAM
team. The opening of "The Bronze Serpent" Coffee House
was the fulfillment of a long awaited dream. Each Friday night
150 young people would pack into the renovated basement in the "arts" district
of downtown Budapest to hear live music, talk with friends, and
have a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. Many were touched by the
Love of Christ. For some this was the most exposure to the Gospel
they had ever had. Christians from a variety of local churches joined the team to
begin serving, praying for, and talking with the young people who
would come through the doors. The ministry progressed well throughout
the year. Many non-believers took steps toward faith in Christ
and some made commitments. We expanded to include other formats
such as a follow-up Bible study, praise and teaching nights, showing
of the Jesus Film, and English conversation clubs. It was a real
success in that we achieved our goal to create a venue where both
Christians and non-Christians would come and where ministry was
taking place in many forms.
Reluctantly
we had to close the doors in December of '99. Our lease ended and
our Landlord had his own plans for that location. While disappointed,
we were also greatly encouraged because of the huge potential for
this kind of youth ministry. These ten months acted as a trial
period which enabled us to see that the coffee house is a much
needed and strategic way to reach thousands of non-believing youth
in the city. It also proved to be effective in training believers
in ministry. Since that time our goal was to re-open the coffee
hosue as soon as possible. On April 5, 2002 that became a reality
as we opened our doors again - this time owning the facility ourselves
- continuing the heartbeat of what had begun months before.
